The first week of April is when an impressive collection of classic yachts gather in Antigua from all around the world to compete in our ideal trade wind conditions…
ANTIGUA CLASSIC YACHT REGATTA
1 - 7 April 2020
During Antigua's 'Classic Week' you can expect to see anything from tall ships and schooners to traditional island craft and family live-aboards. Some vessels are modern-day reproductions, while others date back to the early 1900s. Yet each one comes with its own fascinating backstory which the owners and crews are more than happy to recount well into the night.
The Single-Handed Race on Thursday 2 April gets the week off to a flying start. Four days of racing for the full fleet follows, the challenging courses designed to take advantage of Antigua’s scenery, as well as the prevailing sea and wind conditions.
Yet this unique annual regatta isn’t just ‘a must’ for dedicated sailors. Landlubbers love it too. They not only watch the nautical action from south coast vantage points like the iconic Shirley Heights, but they also appreciate the beauty of these classic vessels while they’re at anchor in the Antigua Yacht Club Marina at Falmouth Harbour.
And there are plenty of shoreside events for the whole island to enjoy. Think everything from live music, local food, cream teas and, of course, unlimited quantities of island’s finest rums. Yet the Sunday ‘Parade of Classics’ through historic Nelson’s Dockyard is surely the ultimate celebration of these traditional, much-loved yachts.
